Filing your income tax return may sound like a chore, but finding a reliable tax preparer can be a breeze with help from Better Business Bureau.
BBB processed more than 2,700 complaints against tax preparers in 2014, many of them from consumers who weren’t satisfied with the service they received or who couldn’t contact their tax preparer after the April 15 filing deadline.
BBB offers dozens of BBB Business Reviews for tax preparation companies, accountants and others who prepare taxes for companies and individuals. The reviews include valuable information, such as a company’s length of time in business, website and contact information. The reports also show any complaints filed against a business and indicate how the company responded.
Consumers should ask a tax preparer about his or her qualifications to prepare taxes. For example, is the preparer a certified public accountant, an enrolled agent or a lawyer specializing in income tax? Is the preparer’s office open year-round or only in tax season?
